Manage packages SKUs and barcodes

Create physical sellable forms with separate counts, identifiers and discounts.

Draft article for local review. Instructions may change before release.

An item describes the product. A package describes a physical form of that product that you stock and sell.

TermExample
ItemA particular cigar with a specific size and wrapper
Package formSingle, box of 20 or shop-prepared five-pack
Units per package1, 20 or 5 cigars
SKUA store or supplier code identifying the package
BarcodeThe code scanned to identify that physical sellable form

Each package form has its own stock count. Twenty loose cigars are not automatically a sealed box, even when they contain the same cigar.

Add or edit a package

During item creation, enter packages in the Sellable packages step. For an existing item:

  1. Open Items & packages, find the item and choose View.
  2. In Physical package forms, choose Edit packages.
  3. Choose Add package, or select Edit package for an existing form.
  4. Choose its physical form and enter Units per package.
  5. Optionally enter a package discount.
  6. Enter the required reason and choose Save package.

Use a positive whole-number count. After stock history exists or checkout has been enabled, use a new package form for a different size rather than changing the old count.

Creating a package does not receive stock or convert stock from another form.

Add or change identifiers

Use SKU and barcode history → Edit identifiers on the item's details. Select the exact package, choose the identifier type and enter its value.

A box and a single need identifiers for their own physical forms. Do not assign a box barcode to a single simply because they contain the same cigar. A conflicting active identifier must be resolved before it can identify another package.

Review identifier history when a supplier changes a code or your store replaces a SKU. End an identifier when retiring it, then add the replacement to the correct package. Its historical record remains available.

Package pricing

All forms of the item use the selected supplier's unit source cost and the item's inherited rules. A package can have a percentage or fixed-dollar discount applied before sales tax. It has no separate markup or excise rule.

For example, you can give a box a discount without changing the markup or excise used for singles.

Make packages available for checkout

Review the item and choose Enable for checkout after configuring its supplier pricing and an active barcode for every package you are enabling. Registers receive catalog changes when they synchronize.

To change the physical stock between package forms, use Change packaging.
